Macclesfield win vital match against disappointing Bees

Barnet's disappointing 3-0 defeat on Easter Monday at Macclesfield means that the Bees can still not be sure of League Two safety just yet. First half goals from Danny Thomas and Neil Ashton, plus a goal from Francis Green just after the re-start was a welcome boost to Macclesfield in their own efforts to stay up. Barnet remain on 45 points, having slipped down one place to 16th and have played 37 games. Macclesfield move up a place to 21st with 41 points from 40 games, 8 points clear of Mansfield and Wrexham, having played 2 more than the Stags and 3 more than the Dragons.

Bury jump above Barnet into 15th place with 46 points from 40 games and a little nearer safety after their 2-0 home win over troubled Mansfield. Mansfield have now lost 4 out of their last 5 games and are now 7 points adrift of 22nd placed Notts County, with just one game in hand. It will take a massive improvement in form now for the Stags to escape relegation to the Blue Square Premier for the first time.

It was amazing the number of bottom of the table clashes on Monday. The clashes between Shrewsbury Town and Notts County and Wrexham and Dagenham & Redbridge both ended in goalless draws. Shrewsbury slipped to 18th with 44 points from 39 matches in a relatively safe position, while Notts County dropped to 22nd, only one place above the relegation zone, 7 points above the drop.

The other two sides in the bottom ten both lost 1-0. Accrington went down at home to MK Dons, Mark Wright scoring, while Chester lost 1-0 at Peterborough, Dean Keates scoring the only goal. Such was the strength of the teams they were playing, neither side could have expected to get much out of these games.

With Mansfield losing both of their weekend games and Wrexham only taking one point, the gloom surrounding these two clubs must have deepened and it does look like it will take an amazing change of fortunes for both clubs if they are not both to start next season in the Blue Square Premier for the first time.
