Barnet & Carlisle United first met in 1991/92 following Barnet's promotion from the Conference and in that season, the Bees completed a league double over the Cumbrians, winning 4-2 at underhill with goals from Gary Poole, Dave Howell, Gary Bull & Mark Carter and won 3-1 at Brunton Park, Duncan Horton, Harry Willis & Carter scoring.
The double was completed the following season too with Barnet winning 2-0 at Underhill with goals from Bull & Carter and 1-0 at Brunton Park, Brian Stein scoring. Barnet were promoted at the end of the season but came back down after just one season in the third tier and in 1994/95, it was Carlisle's turn to do the double, winning 4-0 at Brunton Park and 2-0 at Underhill.
In 1995/96, the match at Underhill was goalless, while Carlisle won 2-1 at Brunton Park, Lee Hodges scoring. The clubs next met in 1998/99, Carlisle having been promoted in 1996 but having come back down again. In 1999/00, Barnet won 3-0 at Underhill, Marlon King scoring twice and Darren Currie scoring from the penalty spot, but Carlisle got revenge by winning 3-1 at Brunton Park, Currie scoring for the Bees. In 2001/02, the clubs met in the 1st round of the FA cup at Underhill and took part in a goalless draw with Carlisle winning the replay 1-0. In 2004, Carlisle were relegated to the Conference and the two sides were involved in a battle for the title and promotion. Golas by Ian Hedon, a penalty, Dwane Lee and an own goal gave the Bees a 3-1 win at Brunton Park and by the time the two clubs met at Underhill, Barnet had already clinched the title and the night was one of celebration. Giuliano Grazioli scored a last minute goal to give the Bees a 1-1 draw before the presentation of the Conference trophy. Carlisle went up after winning the play-offs. The to clubs also met in the 4th round of the FA Trophy, in a game played at Morecambe as Brunton Park was flooded. Carlisle won 4-1 with Nicky Bailey scoring for the Bees.
In 2005/06, Barnet made a fine start to life in League Two and included in this was another 3-1 win at Brunton Park, Dean Sinclair, Bailey & Grazioli scoring for Barnet. The fine start quickly fizzled out though and it was Carlisle who were promoted. The Cumbrians won 2-1 at Underhill, Barnet's goal coming from an own goal.
