PAST TIMES: Chesterfield

Barnet and Chesterfield have met each other on 17 occasions all in the fourth tier of the football league. Chesterfield and Barnet have both won seven times and three matches have been drawn. The first time the two sides met was in Barnet’s first season in the football league, in a Division Four match in November 1991, when Chesterfield came to Underhill and won 2-1, Mark Carter scoring for the Bees. The Spireites completed the double that season winning the return at Saltergate, 3-2, Mick Bodley and Duncan Horton scoring for Barnet.

The following season, 92-93, was Barnet’s promotion year and that season they did the double over Chesterfield with 2-1 wins, home and away; Gary Bull scoring both Barnet goals at Underhill and Richard Huxford and Brian Stein scoring at Saltergate. Following Barnet’s quick return back to the bottom tier, now Division 3, in 1994, the two sides resumed their fixtures against one another in 1994/95. Both sides won their respective home games, Barnet winning 4-1 at Underhill; Gerald McMahon, an own goal and two from Dougie Freedman for the Bees, while Chesterfield won the return 2-0.

Chesterfield were promoted at the end of that season and the next time that the two sides met was in the 2000-01 season that ended with Barnet being relegated back to the Conference, However, Barnet did well that season winning 2-1 at Saltergate, with goals from Robbie Sawyers and Ken Charlery,  and drawing 1-1 in the return at Underhill. Chesterfield were the league leaders and went ahead with a disputed penalty in the first half. Barnet fought back however and, with 25 minutes remaining, Mark Arber equalised for the Bees with a spectacular overhead kick. The Barnet side that day was, Harrison; Stockley, Heald, Arber, Flynn; Goodhind, Gower (Currie 78), Brown, Niven; Cottee, Richards.

In 2007/08 the two sides met again in what was now called League Two and both sides lost their home matches. A Jason Norville goal was enough to give the Bees a 1-0 win at Saltergate in September, but Chesterfield got their revenge with a 2-0 win at Underhill late on in December.

On the opening day of 2008/09, Chesterfield won 3-1 at Underhill, with Ashley Carew opened the scoring for the Bees in the 18th minute with a free kick taken from Barnet’s half which was misjudged by Chesterfield goalkeeper, Tommy Lee. Barnet lead 1-0 at half time but Chesterfield took control in the second half and goals from Jamie Ward and Jack Lester (2) gave Chesterfield the three points. Carew’s goal was voted Barnet Supporters Club goal of the year at the end of the season. In the return fixture at Saltergate, the two teams had to settle for a point apiece with Ismail Yakubu scoring for the Bees in a 1-1 draw.

In 2009/10, Chesterfield won 1-0 at Saltergate. The return on Easter Monday saw Barnet win 3-1 at Underhill with one of their best home performances of the season. Paul Furlong scored twice and missed a penalty and Jake Hyde scored the other Bees’ goal. Furlong’s second goal, a stunning drive from an Albert Jarrett cross was voted BFCSA goal of last season. Ironically, Barnet then went on to lose their next six matches before scrambling to League Two safety on the last day of the season.

In 2010/11, Barnet and Chesterfield met at Chesterfield on the opening day of the season with the home side winning 2-1 despite a superb debut stike from Barnet's Glenn Poole. In the return at Underhill, Barnet recovered from going down 2-0 early in the second half to draw 2-2 with a brace of goals from Sam Derring in Martin Allen's first game back as manager at Barnet.

Chesterfield were promoted to League One but then came straight back down the following season. Earlier this season, a mark Byrne goal gave Barnet a 1-0 win at Chesterfield in the middle of a run which saw the Bees take 10 points from 4 matches following the arrival of Edgar Davids.
