Past Times: Hayes & Yeading (Part One)

Next Saturday’s meeting between Barnet and Hayes & Yeading in the FA Trophy will be the first time Barnet have played against them in their current set up. However, Barnet have played against Hayes a number of times.

Barnet first met Hayes for league points way back in the 1930/31 season in the Athenian League, though the two clubs had previously met when Hayes were called Botwell Mission. Barnet won their first meeting at Church Road, 6-0 with 4 goals from Lester Finch and 2 from Ives. The return at Underhill saw the Bees win 4-0 with goals from Richardson, Martin and two from Morris. Barnet won the Athenian League title for the first time that season. The following season, Barnet won 5-1 at Underhill, but Hayes defeated Barnet 4-1 at Church Road in the 1st round of the FA Amateur Cup. Barnet were once gain Athenian champions.

In 1932/33, two goals from Morris and one from Finch gave Barnet a 3-2 win at Underhill just a week after Hayes had hammered the Bees 5-0 at Church End. In 1933/34, goals from Morris, Simpson, Finch and Braithwaite gave Barnet a 4-0 win at Underhill but Hayes won 5-2 at Church Road, Simpson and Braithwaite scoring.

1934/35 saw Barnet win again at Underhill, this time by 4-2 with Weightman scoring a hat trick and Lester Finch scoring the other Bees’ goal. Weightman scored twice at Church Road in the Middlesex Senior Cup 1st round but Hayes won 3-2. The Athenian League game at Church End the two sides drew 2-2 with Richardson and Finch scoring for the Bees.

In 1935/36, Hayes did the double over Barnet winning 5-0 at Hayes and 5-4 at Underhill. Barnet finished a lowly 12th that season. In 1936/37, goals from Weightman, Finch and McCarthy gave the Bees a 3-1 win at Underhill, but Hayes won by the same score at Church Road. The two sides also met in the Middlesex Senior Cup Semi Final which Hayes won 3-1; Weightman scoring for Barnet.

The game at Underhill in 1937/38 was a very high scoring affair which ended in a 7-4 win for Barnet, MacFarlane scored 4, Jordan 2 and Finch 1. Hayes won the game at Church Road 1-0. The 1938/39 season was the last one before the outbreak of the Second World War and Barnet lost 5-2 at Hayes with goals from Kelleher and Fairclough, while the game at Underhill ended in a 1-1 draw.
