PAST TIMES: Notts County

Barnet and Notts County have met each other eleven times, nine in the league and once in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy (JPT). Barnet have only won three of these matches, three have been drawn and County have won five.

The first time the two sides met was in the 1997-98 season, for a Division 3 (now League Two) match at Underhill in November 1997. County won 2-1 after Barnet had gone ahead through Scott McGleish on the hour. However, County came back from behind to win 2-1. In the Notts County side that day was current Bees assistant manager, Ian Hendon, who was the Notts County skipper. In the return, at Meadow Lane, in April 1998, County, who were, by now, the runaway leaders, won 2-0. Hendon was again in the County team, as was former Bee, Alex Dyer. Current Barnet keeper, Lee Harrison, played for Barnet in both the games against County, who won the Division 3 title that season by 17 points. Barnet finished 7th, making the play-offs. They lost in the semi-finals to Colchester United.

The next time the two sides met was in January 2006, at Meadow Lane, in a League Two match, which county narrowly won 1-0. In the return at Underhill, Barnet, who were struggling, faced a County side that were seemingly comfortable. Shortly after half time, Barnet went a goal down, but Barnet came back strongly to win 2-1 with two penalties from Ian Hendon against his own club. Barnet ended the season 18th, while County slipped alarmingly after the defeat at Underhill and finished 21st.

The following season, 2006-07, Barnet met County at Underhill, in September. County were 7th and Barnet were 13th, having recovered from losing their first three matches of the season. Barnet went 2-0 up in the first half through Ian Hendon, with a penalty and a scrappy Jason Puncheon goal. However, County hit back and won the match 3-2 and it could have been more, with Lee Harrison saving a penalty. In the return at Meadow Lane, in January, the two sides drew 1-1, Nicky Bailey scoring for the Bees. Sandwiched in between the two league games that season was a JPT 1st round match at Meadow Lane, which Barnet won 1-0 with a goal from Tresor Kandol. It is the only time the Bees have won at Meadow Lane. Barnet ended the season in 14th place and County finished one place above in 13th.

Last season the two matches both ended in draws. Barnet gave a fine performance at home to Notts County, but for the third home game in a row a match that should have been won ended up as a draw. A stunning Jason Puncheon goal put the Bees ahead, but a second half clanger by Lee Harrison handed County a point. In the return at Meadow Lane in March the two sides played out a goalless draw. Barnet ended the season in 12th place, their highest position since returning to the league in 2005. County had another uncomfortable end of the season, finishing 21st.

Last season, the two sides met at Underhill and County won easily 4-0, all the goals coming in the first half. County completed the double over the Bees by winning the return fixture at Meadow Lane 2-0 in February.

In 2009/10, the two sides met early in the season at Underhill and the Bees won 1-0 with a late goal from Jake Hyde.
