PAST TIMES: Torquay United

Barnet first met Torquay United in 1971 in the 2nd round of the FA Cup when Barnet were a Southern League side. Torquay won 4-1 at Underhill in front of over 4,000 fans, Colin Flatt scoring for the Bees.

The next time that the two clubs met was in the football league Division 3 in 1992, following Barnet’s promotion from the Conference the previous year. Barnet won an enthralling encounter 5-4 at Underhill with two goals from Gary Bull and one apiece for Brian Stein, Nicky Evans and Mark Carter. In the return fixture at Plainmoor, the Bees completed the double by winning 1-0, Tony Sorrell scoring for Barnet, who were promoted to Division 2 at the end of the season.

Following Barnet’s relegation from Division 2 the following season, fixtures between the two sides were resumed in 1994/95. Barnet gain completed the double over the Gulls winning 2-1 at Plainmoor, Mark Newson and Lee Hodges scoring for Barnet and then winning 2-0 at Underhill with goals from Shaun Gale and Dougie Freedman.

The following season, 1995/96, Torquay took a league point from Barnet for the first time when the two sides drew 1-1 at Plainmoor with Paul Wilson scoring for Barnet. In the return fixture at Underhill, Barnet won 4-0 with two goals from Sean Devine and one apiece from Mark Cooper and Phil Simpson.

In 1996/97, Torquay gained their first point at Underhill with a goalless draw, but Barnet won at Plainmoor 2-1 with goals from Jamie Campbell and Lee Howarth. The following season, 1997/98, both matches were drawn, 3-3 at Underhill with two goals from Sean Devine and one for Scott McGleish and the match at Plainmoor ending goalless.

In 1998/99, Barnet won 3-1 at Underhill, Jon Ford, Julian Alsford and Scott McGleish scoring for the Bees and McGleish was the Barnet scorer at Plainmoor in a 1-1 draw. Greg Heald scored the only goal of the game as Barnet won at Plainmoor in season 1999/00, but I the return at Underhill, Torquay at last won a league fixture against Barnet, the match ending 2-1 to the Gulls, Ken Charlery scoring for Barnet.

The following season ended in disaster for Barnet with relegation at the end of the season to the Nationwide Conference. Torquay gained their first home victory over the Bees winning 2-1 with Tony Richards scoring for Barnet. The return at Underhill was on the last day of the season with survival in the League at stake. Barnet had to win to stay up and send Torquay down. Anything else and the Bees were relegated. In the event, Torquay won 3-2 sending Barnet out of the league. Barnet’s goals were an own goal and one from Greg Heald.

Barnet were to spend four years out of the league but were promoted to the now renamed League Two in 2005 after winning the Nationwide Conference. In 2005/06, the two sides drew 0-0 at Plainmoor while a Nicky Bailey goal was enough to give Barnet a 1-0 win at Underhill. The following season, 2006/07, Torquay won 1-0 on the opening day of the season and the return fixture at Plainmoor ended as a 1-1 draw, Nicky Nicolau scoring for the Bees. At the end of the season, Torquay were relegated to the Conference, now renamed the Blue Square Premier, but regained their league place in 2009 via the play-offs.

Earlier this season, the two sides met at Plainmoor where an Albert Adomah goal direct from a free kick gave the Bees their first away win of the 2009/10 season.

Barnet and Torquay have met on 21 occasions in the League, Barnet winning 10 times, Torquay winning 4 times and 7 matches being drawn.
