Barnet first met Welling in the Conference in the 1986/87 season and the meeting at Underhill ended in a 1-1 draw, Eddie Stein scoring for the Bees. The match at Park View Road also ended 1-1, Nicky Evans scoring the Barnet goal.
The following season, Barnet beat Welling 5-2 at Underhill, with goals from Glyn Creaser, Ian Ferguson, Nicky Evans and two from Dave Sansom. The Bees completed a league double at Welling on the last day of the season winning 2-0 through a Dave Sansom penalty and an own goal.
In 1988/89, Eddie Stein scored the Bees’ goal in a 1-1 draw at Welling, while Welling won 3-2 at Underhill; Stein and Dave Regis scoring for the Bees.
In 1989/90, a George Reilly goal gained the Bees a point in a 1-1 draw at Underhill. Welling won 3-1 at home, Phil Gridelet scoring for Barnet.
In 1990/91, Barnet were drawn to play Welling away in the 1st round of the Bob Lord Trophy and the Wings won 1-0. However, the two sides met again in the Conference less than 2 weeks later and Barnet won 4-1 with goals from Eddie stein, Roger Willis, Gary Bull and Tony Lynch. The return at Underhill saw a very exciting game and a crucial one for the Bees who were battling for promotion. Goals from Gary Bull and Frank Murphy gave the Bees a 2-0 lead, but Welling pulled back to 3-2 before a Gary Bull penalty gave Barnet three very important points. Two weeks later, Barnet were crowned champions after a 4-2 win at Fisher and were promoted to the Football League.
Earlier this season, the two sides met at Park View Road in a Conference match and the game ended 1-1 with Keanu Marsh-Brown scoring a penalty for the Bees after they had gone behind and had Andy Yiadom sent off.
