Barnet 5 Dagenham 0 - 11 Oct 2004 - Nationwide Conference

By Jeff Benge

Nationwide Conference

Saturday 9th October 2004

K.O. 12.30pm

Barnet 5 Dagenham & Redbridge 0

Goals: Barnet: Hendon 2, 76(pen)

Strevens 6

Roache 69

Bailey 73

With Guiliano Grazioli still out, Barnet made just one change from the side that beat Exeter City 3-0 in midweek, skipper Ian Hendon replacing Damien Batt at full back.

Barnet got off to an amazing start when a loping run by Ian Hendon ended with a shot into the left corner of the goal, which seemed to go through keeper, Tony Roberts’ hands.

Four minutes later and Barnet were 2-0 up. A superb cross from the left by Richie Graham was headed home by Ben Strevens. Soon after, Liam Hatch fell awkwardly and had to be carried off on a stretcher. A sad sight for Bees fans.

Lee Roache came on to replace him. Shortly after, Roache had a great chance to make it 3-0 when he was one on one with Roberts, but hit his shot straight at the Dag & Red keeper. Nicky Bailey was unlucky too when he appeared to be brought down in the penalty area, but the referee waved play on.

At the other end, Barnet’s central pair of Simon King and Ishmail Yakubu was keeping a very tight rein on Dagenham’s high scoring strike partnership of Craig Mackail-Smith and Chris Moore, who were barely getting a look in. King, in particular, was magnificent.

Half-Time 2-0

Yakubu did not come out for the second half, having received a knock and was replaced by Damien Batt who slotted in at right back, with Ian Hendon moving over to partner Simon King in the centre.

Dagenham pushed up more at the second half and started to create some chances, Moore broke through but his shot was well saved by Scott Tynan with his legs. Mickail-Smith then forced a scrambled shot home, but it was disallowed for offside.

Dagenham were leaving gaps at the back and Roache was causing trouble with his speed and eventually he broke clear following an excellent ball up the wing by Ian Hendon, Roache kept his call and slotted his shot firmly past Roberts to make it 3-0, effectively finishing the match.

Four minutes later, Nicky Bailey made it 4-0 with a wonderful 20-yard curling shot straight into the top right hand corner of the net. Three minutes later, ex-bee, Lee Flynn was adjudged to have brought down Dean Sinclair in the penalty area. The decision seemed rather harsh, but Ian Hendon stepped up to rifle the penalty home into Roberts’ top left hand corner to finish the scoring.

Another fine performance from the Bees with just about everyone playing well, Graham, Hendon, Bailey and King particularly outstanding.

Barnet 2 Dagenham 4 - 17 Jan 2004 - Nationwide Conference

Barnet's hopes of strengthening their place among the play-off contenders were dented at the hands of local-rivals Dagenham & Redbridge who maintained their recent fine form.

The Daggers had beaten Shrewsbury Town 5-0 in their last Nationwide Conference clash and they made the best possible start as they took the lead in the 20th minute.

The visitors took the lead through a Chris Plummer own goal after 19 minutes, but then Barnet hit back with top scorer Giuliano Grazioli drilling home a shot five minutes later after great play by Ismail Yakubu.

The teams were equal for less than two minutes, with Tim Cole scoring for the Daggers, after which Barnet's luck was again out when Ian Hendon had a 28th minute penalty saved.

Dagenham continued the pressure up to the break, winning no fewer than five corners in the space of a few minutes just before half-time.

Then Mark Janney put Garry Hill's side 3-1 up with a cracking long-range shot after the break, only for Grazioli to pull another goal back for the home side.

After a competitive and entertaining second half, Danny Hill stroked home the visitors' fourth on 90 minutes as the Daggers moved to within nine points of the play-off zone.

Dagenham 5 Barnet 2 -16 Aug 2003 - Nationwide Conference

It was St Marks day in Dagenham as Mark Stein grabbed a hat-trick and Mark Bentley netted a brace as the Daggers quite literally made their mark on yet another title campaign.

Barnet replied with a late rally where Giuliano Grazioli found the net twice, once from the penalty spot.

Bentley opened his account for his new club 29 minutes in after a superb build up. Mark Janney's ball fell to Chris Piper who saw his effort parried away leaving Leon Braithwaite to knock the ball down into Bentley's path and he was never going to miss such a great opportunity from ten yards.

Bentley's goals are rather like buses as five minutes later the second one arrived. Paul Bruce's corner met Bentley's head on the near post and after the simplest of flicks he was suddenly the Daggers top scorer so far this season.

That was to be short lived though as Mark Stein nipped the first of three to claim back his title 58 minutes in. Bruce sent the ball cruising into his path and leading Danny Maddix on the deck Stein slotted home at the far post.

Only three minutes passed between goals this time and Bentley became provider for his name sake leaving Stein to grab his second from ten yards out.

Barnet finally flat found a reply 70 minutes in, but even that was a gift from a sloppy Ashley Vickers backpass. Grazioli nipped onto the ball and lobbed it over Tony Roberts head to get the Bees off the mark.

It looked like a comeback was on the cards when Lee Mathews pulled down Guy Lopez in the box and the referee awarded a penalty. Grazioli stepped up to convert it but that was the end of their comeback as this was a day that belonged to the Daggers as they were lifted from 21st to 14th in the table.

Dagger's manager Gary Hill said: "Barnet have had some good results this season so we knew it would be a tough game but after ten minutes it was all one-way traffic."

Dagenham 5 Barnet 1 - 28 Jan 2003 - Nationwide Conference

Dagenham & Redbridge carried on from where they left off following their agonising FA Cup defeat to Norwich as they swept aside Barnet to move further up the Nationwide Conference table.

It was an important win for the Daggers who are chasing a play-off spot and Junior McDougald gave them the ideal start. Paul Terry headed the ball back into the box, Steve West made a nuisance of himself and McDougald fired a bouncing ball into the corner of the net.

Barnet in contrast to the slick Daggers never mustered a shot in the first half.

In the 38th minute Daggers deservedly took a two-goal lead. Terry touched a free kick to Danny Shipp whose low shot was pushed onto the post and just over the line by goalkeeper Danny Naisbitt.

Five minutes later and the game was all over. John McGrath's free kick from the left caused Ismail Yakubu and Naisbitt to almost collide and the ball bounced up for West to score a simple tap in.

The second half saw Barnet have more shots in the opening five minutes than they did in the rest of the game. The best of these was Conference top scorer Junior Agogo's effort which hit the side netting but he should have done better.

Daggers weathered this brief storm and West flicked the ball on for Mark Stein who rounded the keeper to score the fourth after 56 minutes.

Danny Brown's throughball saw Agogo round home keeper Paul Gothard to pull a goal back and Agogo should have had a penalty when he was brought down by Tim Cole.

However, it was all Daggers late in the game and Shipp's hassling eventually saw the Barnet defence dispossessed. McGrath's low cross allowed Stein to score his second goal of the night and round off the scoring.

Barnet 2 Dagenham 1 - 26 Dec 2002- Nationwide Conference

After just 41 seconds the visitors opened the scoring when Gary FletcherÂ’s left-wing cross was placed home by Paul Terry with his left foot giving keeper Danny Naisbitt no chance.

Conditions were wet and windy and players were often sliding over, this helped the lively forwards such as Junior Agogo, who after 15 minutes steered Mark Gower's corner over the bar.

Minutes later Agogo had a right-foot shot that went just wide of the post and left-back Lee Flynn tried a drive from 30 yards but his shot was well wide.

At the other end Daggers striker Junior McDougald broke through and Bees keeper Naisbitt has to race out of his area to partly clear the ball which ended up near the corner flag.

Naisbitt was then forced to concede a foul rather then let the striker shoot at the empty goal.

Dagenham seemed to be happy to play defensively and hold on to their one-goal advantage. This enabled John Doolan and Gower to take charge of the midfield and for Agogo and Wayne Purser to show their speed and test the visitors backline.

It was no surprise when Barnet equalised in the 31st minute when captain Greg Heald headed home Gower's cross from ten yards.

In the second half Dagenham's Danny Shipp was booked for a foul and three minutes later was given a second yellow card for kicking the ball away.

Dagenham side then played with a 5-3-1 line-up and were hard pressed to keep the Bees away from the goal.

It was no surprise when in the 94th minute of the game, loan signing Ian Hendon hit a 40-yard ball which Agogo controlled, before beating Tim Cole to score from ten yards.

The Bees deserved their win, but Dagenham had made them work for the three points.

Barnet 4 Dagenham 0 - 19 Mar 2002 - Nationwide Conference
