Welling United were formed in 1963 and began as a club playing park football on a Sunday but developed rapidly and joined the London Spartan League before joining the Athenian League in 1978. In 1981, they joined the Southern League Southern Division and they finished 8th in their first season which was enough to place them in the re-organised Southern Premier the following season.

In 1983 they finished 3rd and three years later, in 1986, they won the Southern League title by a huge margin of 23 points, gaining promotion to the Conference. In their first season they finished 20th and were only reprieved by Nuneaton Borough being relegated due to financial irregularities after finishing 18th.

After struggling at this level initially, Welling improved and in 1990 they finished 6th. They settled down to become a largely lower half of the table Conference side but only escaped relegation in 1999 due to Barrow going into administration after Welling finished 20th. The following season, Welling finished 20th again and this time they were relegated back to the Southern League.

In 2004, Welling finished 9th which was enough to qualify them for the new Conference South , where they finished 16th in their first season. In 2011, they missed out on the play-offs by just a point finishing 6th and finished 3rd the following season to make the play-offs where they lost 1-0 to Dartford in the final after beating Sutton United.

In 2013, Welling won the Conference South title by four points from Salisbury City and were promoted to Conference National, where they finished 16th last season.

Barnet first met Welling in the Conference in the 1986/87 season and the meeting at Underhill ended in a 1-1 draw, Eddie Stein scoring for the Bees. The match at Park View Road also ended 1-1, Nicky Evans scoring the Barnet goal.

The following season, Barnet beat Welling 5-2 at Underhill, with goals from Glyn Creaser, Ian Ferguson, Nicky Evans and two from Dave Sansom. The Bees completed a league double at Welling on the last day of the season winning 2-0 through a Dave Sansom penalty and an own goal.

In 1988/89, Eddie Stein scored the Bees’ goal in a 1-1 draw at Welling, while Welling won 3-2 at Underhill; Stein and Dave Regis scoring for the Bees.

In 1989/90, a George Reilly goal gained the Bees a point in a 1-1 draw at Underhill. Welling won 3-1 at home, Phil Gridelet scoring for Barnet.

In 1990/91, Barnet were drawn to play Welling away in the 1st round of the Bob Lord Trophy and the Wings won 1-0. However, the two sides met again in the Conference less than 2 weeks later and Barnet won 4-1 with goals from Eddie stein, Roger Willis, Gary Bull and Tony Lynch. The return at Underhill saw a very exciting game and a crucial one for the Bees who were battling for promotion. Goals from Gary Bull and Frank Murphy gave the Bees a 2-0 lead, but Welling pulled back to 3-2 before a Gary Bull penalty gave Barnet three very important points. Two weeks later, Barnet were crowned champions after a 4-2 win at Fisher and were promoted to the Football League.

Last season, both matches ended in draws; 1-1 at Welling with Keanu Marsh-Brown scoring for Barnet, while the match at the Hive ended goalless.

Earlier this season, John Akinde scored both goals in a 2-1 win at Park View Road, his second securing the Bees a win in the last minute of the game.

Adam Gross joined Barnet from Charlton Athletic in the summer of 2005 and made 53 appearances for the Bees, scoring 1 goal before being released at the end of the 2006/07 season.  He then joined Grays but had a loan spell with Welling in 2008. He currently plays for Thurrock.
