This Saturday, Barnet travel across to West London for a rare local derby against Brentford, who were relegated from League One last season. Brentford have started the new season with two draws, having been held 1-1 at home, on the opening day, by Mansfield Town, the former Torquay and Hereford striker, Alan Connell scoring the other Bees' goal. Last Saturday, they were held -1 away at Notts County, Kevin O'Connor scoring. In between, Brentford were beaten 3-0 at home to Championship side, Bristol City, in the first round of the Carling Cup.
Brentford have a new manager this season in Terry Butcher, the former Ipswich Town and England star who ha gained a lot of managerial experience north of the border, with jobs at Raith Rovers, Dundee United and Motherwell, as well as having been player - manager at Coventry City and Motherwell. However, this is Butcher's first job in the English lower leagues.
In goal, Butcher has brought in Reading youngster, Ben Hamer, in on loan. Hamer, spent last season on loan at Conference club, Crawley Town, where he made 45 appearances. Twenty year old, Clark Masters mad his debut last season, making 11 appearances and Brentford can also call on former Colchester and Hibernian keeper, Simon Brown.
In defence, Polish under 20 international defender, Ben Starosta has come in on loan from Sheffield United, while on the left side is another loan player, Grant Basey who has arrived from Charlton Athletic. During the summer, Butcher obtained the services of experienced former Reading centre half, John Mackie from Leyton Orient and he has been made team captain. Mackie was a member of the Orient side that gained promotion from League 2, in 2006. At right back, it's likely that long serving, Kevin O'Connor will complete the defence though he is equally at home in midfield. O'Conner scored last Saturday at Notts County and has made nearly 300 appearances for Brentford. Also available are former Wycombe player, Adrian Pettigrew, who can also play in midfield, former Chelsea youngster, Sam Tillen, experienced Matthew Heywood who joined from Bristol City and 19 year old Karleigh Osborne who made his debut 2 years ago.
In midfield, there is yet another loan player, Sammy Moore, who has arrived from Ipswich Town; 21 year old, John Mousinho, who broke through last season with 37 first team appearances, former Yoevil Town and Dagenham & Redbridge player, Glenn Poole, who joined in the summer from Conference side, Grays Athletic and former MK Dons player, Gary Smith, who also arrived in the summer having been given a free transfer by ex- Barnet manager, Martin Allen, just before he left the Dons for Leicester City. Former Walsall player, Craig Pead who helped the midlands club to the League Two title and the much travelled ex Brighton player, Paul Brooker have yet to make a start this season.
Up front, Butcher has brought in the vastly experienced, Tony Thorpe from Torquay United, along with another former Gulls' striker, Alan Connell, who was at Hereford last season. Connell scored Brentford's opening goal of the season at home to Mansfield. Nineteen year old, Charlie Ide, who made his first start last August, has begun this season as first choice striker. He made 28 appearances last season, scoring 7 goals. Former youth player, Ryan Peters, who has made a handful of starts, will be looking to break through as a regular this season.
Possible team for Saturday:
Hamer; Starosta, Pettigrew, Mackie, Basey; Mousinho, O'Connor, Moore, Poole; Ide, Connell.
Subs: Masters, Smith, Peters, Osborne, Tillen.
