Paul Furlong, who scored 9 goals from 21 appearances last season while on loan from Southend United, has still not given a decision as to whether or not he will sign on for another year at Underhill. He has played in the pre-season match at
Four trialists also played in that game and will all play in the annual curtain raiser at Underhill against Arsenal on Saturday. They are goalkeeper, Will Viner, a former PROTEC youngster at Barnet, who played for Hendon last season; Clovis Kamdjo, a centre back who was formerly with Reading; left winger, Albert Jarrett who has played for Watford, Brighton and Wimbledon and who played for Gillingham last season, making 16 league appearances and played against the Bees in the 2-2 draw at Underhill and left back, Ahmed Dean who has played for Peterborough, Aldershot and St.Albans and who made 28 league appearances for Macclesfield Town last season.
The four trialists are interesting in that they play in positions in which the Barnet squad is quite lacking at the moment. While the squad is quite strong in most of the midfield positions and up front, particularly if Ian Hendon manages to persuade Paul Furlong to sign on for the new season, there is a shortage of defenders and while the situation regarding left sided players is not as critical as it was at the beginning of last season where Kenny Gillet was the only left sided player in the club, the addition of a another left sided defender and a left sided midfield player could be seen as advantageous. Dean and Jarrett certainly fit the bill in terms of position.
Apart from the first choice back four line up of Devera, Yakubu, Breen and Gillet, there are no other specialist defenders currently at the club so Kamdjo certainly has a real opportunity to win a contract at Barnet, and the same could be said for Dean. By signing a centre back and left back, Hendon could then cover all the defensive positions as Devera can switch to centre back if necessary and Mark Hughes has shown that he can play at right back when required.
Viner too has an opportunity to win a contract as he could provide useful cover for Jake Cole on top of that provided my our new first team coach, Lee Harrison.
It will certainly be interesting to see how the four trialists get on against Arsenal on Saturday and to see how many of them end up staying at Underhill for the season.
