Barnet boss Martin Allen was left fuming after a pulsating game at Underhill saw his team charge into third place with a dramatic winner following Danny Maddix's controversial late dismissal.
Referee Woolmer's five yellow cards and one red made a hard-fought contest a dirtier affair then it really was.
"I have never criticised a ref in my time here at Barnet," said Allen afterwards.
"But the decision to send off Danny Maddix was wrong. I am delighted with the result, but not the performance because Gravesend were the better team on the night in all fairness. These are the games we need to win though." The game started very brightly with both teams looking to stamp their authority on the match and the early evening dew gave the pitch some extra zip.
It was a very tight affair with few chances for either side, but both teams could have broken the deadlock in the last five minutes before the break.
Barnet's Mark Williams came closest for the home team when his looping header was cleared off the line by Francis Duku and Rob Haworth had the best effort of the half when his well-struck shot was palmed away by Shane Gore right on the stroke of half time.
The second half began with both teams fighting for the ball and looking to get the upper hand making the game a real end-to-end affair.
Gravesend's captain Steve McKimm came closest midway through the half when his close-range header hoofed over the bar.
The real drama came in the last ten minutes of the half when the referee became the real difference between the two teams.
The controversial decision by the ref to send off Maddix with five minutes to go for a dubious professional foul fired Barnet into action.
The home side were not to be denied a win and centre-back Chris Plummer slotted home the dramatic winner from six yards when Ben Strevens cut the ball back from the by-line.
