Nicky Bailey's 12th minute strike ensured all three points for Barnet at Underhill and left Torquay rooted to bottom of League Two.
Barnet, in their away kit of all black, put in a towering performance and were never really troubled by Torquay.
The first half started off at a roaring pace, with Barnet getting the better of Torquay and their three centre backs. A long ball forward in the third minute from the Barnet defence was flicked on to Liam Hatch but Torquay keeper Andy Marriott was quick to smother the ball. Just two minutes later a sweeping move forward by Barnet allowed Hatch another effort on goal, this time he dragged his shot just wide from 20 yards.
Barnet finally broke the deadlock in the 12th minute. Left back Damien Batt played in Louis Soares down the left flank. His cross was controlled by Hatch who laid it off to Bailey and the midfield man slotted home his fifth of the season from 12 yards.
The visitors had a great chance to level three minutes later. The ball was lofted into the box and Simon King appeared to hold debutant Adam Lockwood's shirt. Referee Thorpe pointed to the spot immediately. Paul D. Robinson stepped up to take it but dragged it wide to he delight of the home fans.
Torquay made two changes seven minutes into the second half, reverting to 4-4-2. But they found themselves under increasing pressure.
A flurry of Barnet corner's followed with Soares hitting the post but Torquay's defence held on and they tried to push forward. Liam Coleman's ambitious drive flew over but there was little support offered to Torquay's best player Ian Stonebridge, on loan from Wycombe.
With only one win so far this season Torquay remain rooted to the bottom of the table, while Barnet's win moves them up to mid-table.
