But things could have been a lot different if Charlton and Johnnie Jackson could take their early chances; most notably after a quarter of an hour when Jackson was through on goal only to shoot wide of the target.
The first half lacked quality, but former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jackson again had a chance to give the Addicks the lead, but this time his free kick from 20 yards out curled just over Jake Cole's goal.
The match livened up in the second half. Steve Kabba, on his return from injury, laid the ball off to Mark Byrne, only for the Irishman to have his 52nd minute shot well caught by Rob Elliot.
The away side soon started to attack Barnet's defence and after an hour, Therry Racon hit a delicious half volley that was well saved by Jake Cole before the goalkeeper also brilliantly saved Paul Benson's follow-up. Minutes later, Charlton came even closer to taking the lead when substitute Pawell Abbot saw his header strike the crossbar before Joe Devera could manage to make a long clearance.
Barnet had their opportunities to get in front and with fifteen minutes remaining, George Francombe who was brilliant throughout, produced a great cross which found substitute Mauro Vilhete, but Elliot acrobatically tipped the ball round the post for a corner. Mark Marshall also came close to scoring for the Bees when he powered past veteran defender Gary Doherty but Elliot just got his hands to the ball to deny the young winger his fifth goal for Barnet. The goalkeeper was on fine form and yet again denied Barnet a winning goal; unorthodoxly making a save with his forearm from a Ricky Holmes' shot in injury time.
Either team could have won the match, but in the end it finished goalless and they will have to do it all over again to see who gets through to the second round of The F.A. Cup.
First of all for Barnet, it is Torquay United at Plainmoor next Saturday, and the Bees will be hoping to move off the bottom of the Football League in Devon.
