Barnet v Rotherham United Match Report

Last updated : 19 September 2010 By Adam Hern

Barnet could no longer maintain an unbeaten home start to the season, as promotion hopefuls Rotherham United put 4 past the Bees at Underhill

Mark Stimson was looking for his side to build on last weeks brilliant effort away at Lincoln, and after a good passing move with just 2 minutes on the clock, Mark Byrne had a driven shot well saved by Andy Warrington in the Rotherham goal.

Barnet dominated the proceedings after that, but not before Adam Le Fondre broke clear of the Barnet defence and after controlling the ball with his chest, his shot was nicely palmed away from danger by Jake Cole.

Like last week, former Watford defender Jordan Parkes looked strong going forward and had numerous long range opportunities to score, most notably after cutting inside from the left wing after 29 minutes, before shooting just wide of the target.

This was the start of a brilliant attacking spell by Barnet and Mark Marshall produced a very tempting ball across the face of goal but Ricky Holmes, the attacker signed from Chelmsford City in the summer, couldn't get to the ball in time when it would have been a simple tap in. Ricky Holmes almost immediately made amends for that chance after 32 minutes, and after the ball was cut back by Joe Devera, Holmes's placed shot went just wide of the bottom left hand corner of the goal.

After the interval, the home side yet again came out firing on all cylinders and a matter of minutes after the restart, Steve Kabba played a delightful through ball into Mark Marshall after a brilliant advantage by the referee, but the winger couldn't get his 3rd goal in as many home matches.

Perhaps the best chance for Barnet with the games still tied at nil-nil fell to Clovis Kamdjo after Glen Southam's shot was parried by the goalkeeper, but somehow the Cameroonian centre back managed to hit the bar with an open goal at his mercy.

The deadlock was broken after 69 minutes and surprisingly it was the Millers who got took the advantage. After a heavy goal mouth scramble, bald headed Kevin Ellison stabbed the ball into the net totally against the run of play.

That was the first of three Rotherham goals in the space of 7 minutes. The second goal came after an Adam Le Fondre pass lead to Tom Pope having a simple finish from close range, to insure that more than one Pope would be able to enjoy his visit to London this week. Barnet and their loyal supporters were still in shock after being in a seemingly dominant position with only one team really looking likely score. Danny Harrison was the man who scored Rotherham's third goal as his speculative shot from the edge of the area rolled into the bottom corner of the net.

Adam Le Fondre added a fourth goal for the away side to insure he yet again could get his name on the score sheet, but not after Mark Byrne got a consolation goal for Barnet after a nice pass by substitute Glenn Poole.

4-1 to the away side is how the game finished, and the next two games are away for the Bees; firstly a long haul away trip to Morecambe and then a relatively short journey down the road to Wycombe. Rotherham manager Ronnie Moore will admit that his side didn't have it all their own way by any stretch of the imagination, but all the same will be delighted with the result.
