Charlton Athletic 4 Barnet 1

Barnet went out off the Johnstone's paint Trophy in the 2nd round to a strong Charlton Athletic. The high flying, League One side proved to be just too strong for the Bees in the end.

Barnet manager, Ian Hendon made just three changes from the side that beat Grimsby on Saturday. Gary Breen and Paul Furlong were rested and Albert Adomah missed the game through injury. Daniel Leach, Albert Jarrett and Jake Hyde came in to the side.

Barnet started the livelier of the two sides and had already threatened the home goal when they took a shock lead on 12 minutes, Mark Hughes laying the ball off wide for John O'FLYNN to drive home into the far corner of the net past Elliott, the Charlton keeper.

The visitors continued to impress and it was against the run of play when Charlton drew level four minutes later, former MK Dons striker, Izale McLeod firing home with a shot that was deflected off of Ismail Yakubu and deceived Bees' keeper, Jake Cole.

However, Barnet continued to impress playing neat football and the visitors had what looked like a very reasonable claim for a penalty when Yannick Bolasie was sent tumbling in the penalty area.

Charlton were not creating much but they looked dangerous when they broke quickly and the Bees' defence weren't closing them down quickly enough. This was to prove costly four minutes before the break when slack defending lead to Tamer Tuna firing home after the ball broke rather fortunately for the Charlton striker.

Barnet continued their neat controlled football after the break but it lacked penetration and Charlton began to control the game in the second half. If the Bees had been unlucky to go in at half time a goal down, then, in the second period, the home side's class began to tell. However, with 15 minutes left the Bees were still in with a chance and had created a few awkward moments for the League One side, in particular when Bolasie brought a fine save from Elliott.

However, a stunningly executed free kick by Charlton skipper Nicky Bailey settled the match. The former Underhill favourite fired a terrific shot from about 20 yards which flew past Jake Cole.

Barnet still kept going, trying to create chances, but the game was sewn up when Danny Hart, on as a substitute, naively had a shot charged down which left the Bees' defence totally exposed to a break and Scott Wagstaff broke clear and scored with a ferocious drive to wrap up the game for the home side with just a few minutes remaining.

A brave effort by the Bees, who were unlucky not to get a penalty when the score was 1-1, but in the end, Charlton were just a bit too good for Barnet, though the final score was a bit cruel on the League Two side.
