MATCH REPORT: Barnet 2 Millwall 0

Last updated : 01 September 2009 By Jaybee
Barnet beat Millwall 2-0 at Underhill tonight in the 1st round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy. It was the first Bees' win any cup competition since we knocked Swindon Town out of the FA Cup in the 3rd round in January 2008. It was also our first win in the JPT since 2006.

Following, three wins on the trot, Barnet were looking to extend their run in their first ever meeting with the South London club. Manager, Ian Hendon made a few changes from the side that beat Notts County on Saturday, using the JPT match to give opportunities to a few players. Joe Devera made his first start at right back in place of Ryan O'Neill, while Clovis Kamdjo came in at centre back for the injured Daniel Leach. In midfield, Micah Hyde was rested and Nicky Deverdics brought in and Yannick Bolasie came in on the left for Albert Jarrett. John O'Flynn and Jake Hyde were paired up front for the first time with Paul Furlong rested. Mark Hughes was named captain in the absence of Micah Hyde.

Barnet made a lively start and took the lead in only the second minute. The Millwall left back slipped on the ball out on the Barnet right and Albert Adomah took advantage, taking the ball to the line and cutting back across the face of the goal for Jake HYDE to slip the ball in from close range. It was Hyde's fourth goal for the Bees from just four starts.

A few minutes later and a Barnet slip at the other end almost let in the visitors as Millwall winger, David martin was able to draw Cole away from his goal but he delayed his cross just a fraction and the Bees' keeper was able to get back in front of goal to save a straightforward header following Martin's cross.

Soon after another Barnet defensive error let in Lions' striker, Jason Price but his fierce shot was pushed wide of the post by Cole. Millwall then broke the Bees' offside trap, but a fine tackle by Ismail Yakubu cleared the danger.

Millwall were well on top in the first half and appeared to have got over the shock of going behind so early on. Another fine cross from the left by Martin was headed just over the Bees' bar as the Lions went in search of an equaliser and they thought that they had got a goal when Jason Price, who was becoming a handful for the home defence, hit a tremendous drive from inside the penalty area that hit the underside of the cross bar but bounced up and Clovis Kamdjo was able to head the ball over for a corner. From the ensuing corner, Cole had to make a good save from a header.

Barnet's attacks were few and far between but with Albert Adomah on the floor injured near the centre circle, the ball was played up on to right side of the Millwall penalty area and John O'Flynn put over a difficult low cross which Sullivan, in the Millwall goal, spilled but he was able to recover before the oncoming Jake Hyde could get a shot in.

Clovis Kamdjo then had to clear another dangerous cross from Martin and soon after Jake Cole had to dive to his left to save. Barnet had a chance when a long Joe Devera throw caused a lot of trouble in the Millwall defence but they eventually cleared it. As half time neared, Barnet were beginning to look more comfortable, but just before half time, Joe Devera was booked for a clumsy wild challenge. Adomah then shot just wide.

HT: Bees 1 Lions 0

Barnet came out for the second half in determined mood and a good run by Albert Adomah ended with a fine shot and a good save from Sullivan. Barnet chairman, Tony Kleanthous had earlier in the day rejected an improved offer from Blackpool, but it certainly didn't seem to upset the exciting Bees' winger as he caused the visitors'' defence all kinds of trouble in the second half.

Barnet began to take control of the game as Millwall seemed to run out of ideas. A fine cross from the left by Yannick Bolasie missed everybody as Barnet began to win a few corners and apply some pressure. An Adomah cross drifted just wide and then the same player hit a superb cross shot that deserved a goal beating Sullivan but going just wide of the post.

Millwall were restricted to long shots and long high crosses into the box. Ismail Yakubu then headed just wide from an Adomah corner before another fine Adomah corner was headed back across goal for Ismail YAKUBU to firmly head home to put Barnet 2-0 ahead.

Albert Adomah was then brought off and replaced by Albert Jarrett who came in on the left wing with Bolasie moving to the right. The game then seemed to drift towards the end though Cole had to make a couple of good saves from long range Millwall efforts. Hendon brought on Elliott Charles for John O'Flynn and Danny Hart for Yannick Bolasie as Barnet were able to see out the game without conceding any late goals. It was Jake Cole's fourth clean sheet in a row.

It was a deserved win for the Bees who had to withstand some heavy pressure in the first half from the League One side, but Barnet were by far the better side after the break and can now look forward to their name going into the draw for the 2nd round. Wembley anyone?
