Barnet won their first League Cup game since beating Cardiff City in 2006, with a fine and deserved win at League One, Millwall. Manager, Martin Allen gave Michael Nelson his debut and brought Tom Champion into the middle leaving John Akinde as the only striker.
The Bees had already threatened before they took the lead on 11 minutes. Curtis Weston put John Akinde through and he drove into the penalty area with a typically determined run only to be fouled and the Referee pointed to the spot. AKINDE comfortably scored with the spot kick.
A fine run by Luke Gambin, who was having a fine game, saw his shot beat the keeper but graze the outside of the post before Graham Stack came to the Bees’ rescue spreading himself wide to block Martin’s shot when he was clean through. The ball rebounded off Sam Togwell and looked to be going in but Togwell managed to clear off the line.
Barnet lead 1-0 at half time and nearly extended their lead early in the second half when Gambin crossed for Akinde to head down and Michael Nelson hit a firm shot towards goal but it was cleared away.
Millwall had a great chance of leveling the scores when Gambin fouled Ferguson in the area and the referee awarded a penalty but Morison’s spot kick hit the bar and was cleared.
Akinde then had another chance to extend Barnet’s lead when he was put through into the penalty area by Vilhete, but keeper, Archer managed to save and on 76 minutes, the home side equalized when Morison flicked home a neat header from a free kick.
It seemed as though Barnet would be overrun but the Bees managed to hang on until the end of normal time and then went on to dominate the first half of extra time and 12 minutes into extra time, Michael Gash headed on to Akinde whose terrific run took him past a Millwall defender and into the penalty area where he laid the ball off to Andy YIADOM who netted comfortably.
The Bees managed the second half of extra time in a professional manner to run out 2-1 winners.
