Barnet travelled to Portsmouthtonight for a 1st round Carling Cup match very much the underdogs against the Championship side. Lawrie Sanchez made just one change from the team that started Saturday’s win at Morecambe; Tommy Fraser coming in for Sam Deering in midfield.

The Bees though were the dominant side during the first half and took the lead when Mark HUGHES headed home a Mark Marshall corner. Izale McLeod came close son after and Clovis Kamdjo had a headed goal disallowed for offside as the Bees went in a goal ahead at half time.

Barnet continued to create chances in the second half with McLeod,Marshall,Jordan Parkes and substitute, Charlie Taylor all coming close. The worry was that Barnet might pay for not grabbing a second goal but the Bees hung on for a famous victory and a place in the second round draw. Tonight’s win was Barnet’s first in the Carling Cup for five years. A second clean sheet as well for Dean Brill who has yet to concede a goal for the Bees. Wonderful. Next up, Port Vale at home on Saturday.
