Farnborough Town 0-0 Barnet - August 17th 2004 - Nationwide Conference
Farnborough Town secured their first point of the Conference season in an emotional night at Cherrywood Road.Dean Austin's men battled hard against the buzzing Bees and might have even nicked all three points late on had captain Gary Holloway not screwed his shot wide when in a good position. This was an emotional night for the home supporters who are currently protesting over the proposed takeover of the club.A large percentage of the 1,069 crowd, including the large Barnet contingent, staged a sit-in vigil on the pitch to demonstrate over the new ownership of Ron Higgins and Tony Turberville. With this going on, anything on the pitch was a bonus for Boro and the fans, for the first time in a long summer went home happy.Barnet started the stronger however and had Boro on the ropes early on with giant striker Liam Hatch finding himself with no fewer than three aerial opportunities, two of which missed the target, the third bravely gathered by keeper Craig Holloway.Although Boro showed spirit, they were second best to Barnet who were quicker and sharper to the chase. That said however, although they created chances, there wasn't much to worry the somewhat makeshift Boro backline.Instead, the best chance of the half came at the other end when Ali Chaaban released Tony Taggart, who shot into the body of Bees keeper Shane Gore. The half-time protest warmed up the fans and the team responded after the break as the rain came down and quickened up the pace of the game.Barnet still posed the biggest threat in front of goal however with Richard Graham twice going close from the edge of the box, the second of which producing a fine reaction save from Holloway.Boro's Adam Theo came too close to putting the ball through his own net, while substitute Lee Roach saw his glancing header from Graham's corner fly just wide of the far post.Holloway could well have sealed what would have been the ultimate in smash and grab raids from Taggart's throughball late on, but Boro fans would have been happy to end what has been a turbulent fortnight on a somewhat happier note.
Barnet 0-2 Farnborough Town - December 20th 2003, Nationwide Conference
Farnborough eased their relegation worries by beating a makeshift Barnet side 2-0 in a scrappy game at Underhill.Martin Allen's Barnet side were missing three key players going into the game with 19-goal topscorer Guiliano Grazioli and club captain Ian Hendon suspended, as well as Simon King.Farnborough by contrast were virtually at full strength with only defender Matthew Beall missing and then they capitalised on defensive mistakes to score through Nick Burton and Ryan Semple.Barnet were playing on the sloping Underhill pitch for the first time in five weeks and neither side looked at home, making silly mistakes in blustery conditions. As early as the third minute Boro goalkeeper Mark Osborn ballooned his clearance to Barnet's Tony Scully, but he could only manage a weak effort on goal.Later Barnet looked to have a definite penalty when Mark Williams was brought down by Osborn while through on goal.Eight minutes from half time, Barnet again looked certain to score when after a goalmouth scramble the ball broke to Scully, but his shot was blocked on the line. These chances were to cost Barnet dearly as Farnborough took the lead just four minutes later.Richard Hodgson took a dangerous free kick 25 yards out on the left and picked out captain Burton, who powered his header into the net.Farnborough reduced Barnet to a handful of chances in the second half. Williams should have scored straight after the interval after being put through by Ismail Yakubu, but his shot was well saved by the outstanding Osborn.striker Liam Hatch also managed two speculative efforts on target late in the game, but should have passed to players in better positions on both occasions.Minutes from the end, Farnborough killed off the game when Semple won the ball after tussling with Geoff Pitcher in the penalty area. After taking one more touch, Semple launched a cracking shot into the top right-hand corner of the net.
Barnet 1-2 Farnborough Town - 17th September 2002, Nationwide Conference
Farnborough Town gained their first away win of the season against a ten-man Barnet side.It was Farnborough who started well when a cross from the left wing was met by Ken Charlery, the former Barnet man, but he failed to place the ball past keeper Lee Harrison.Minutes later Steve Watson headed wide for Town. It wasn't until the 12th minute that Barnet threatened Boro's goal when Mark Gower's curling corner was headed clear by Jim Rodwell.Minutes later Ben Strevens' right-foot shot was saved by Tony Pennock. In the 16th minute Lee Gledhill was adjudged to have handled in the penalty area. Referee Mr Conn was surrounded by the Barnet players who insisted that it was a Farnborough defender that handled the ball. They even called in the assistant referee but the decision stood.Charlery took the spot-kick with his right foot and this was blocked by keeper Harrison. Dean Green was first to react and slammed the ball into the top corner of the goal.Gledhill was shown red and threw his shirt off in disgust and the referee was continually booed from this moment.Town could easily have scored three or four more goals. Green's shot was deflected for a corner. Tony Taggart, the man of the match, had a shot saved by Harrison and Garry Butterworth stumbled over the ball when it looked easier to score.Barnet's ten men had been pushed back defending for long periods, but they did manage an attempt by John Doolan when his left-foot shot from ten yards went over the bar.In the second half it was all Barnet playing down the slope, they forced three corners in a row and for some reason Farnborough decided to sit on their lead.Further attempts by Strevens and Toby Oshitola nearly brought an equaliser for the Bees, before in the 85th minute Junior Agogo hit a tremendous right-foot shot to level. The game looked as though it would end in a draw but it was that man Green who hit a 20-yard right-foot shot past Harrison for the winner
