What a season, final part!

Burton 1-1 Barnet
Nationwide Conference, Saturday 29th January 2005 @ 15:00; Eton Park
Skipper Darren Stride rocked runaway leaders Barnet with a last-gasp goal to rescue a precious point for Burton.

With regular strikers Giuliano Grazioli and Liam Hatch missing through injury, the Bees found an able deputy in Lee Roach whose 39th minute goal seemed enough to maintain their relentless march towards the Conference title.

But Burton never gave up the fight and their determination was rewarded when Stride grabbed the equaliser in the third minute of stoppage time.

The Brewers made a lively start, winning three corners in the first two minutes, but the Bees soaked up the pressure with relative ease.

Chris Hall twice fired wide from the edge of the area and Stride had a header comfortably saved by Scott Tynan.

The visitors gradually began to seize control of the game, though their goal came as something of gift.

Burton brought back reinforcements to defend a Simon Clist corner, but the ball sailed over a cluster of heads and Roach pounced for a close-range finish.

Burton twice went close to the equaliser in a flurry of pressure at the start of the second half, Aaron Webster lashing a 20-yard free kick a fraction too high and Craig Dudley dipping a 25-yard effort on to the roof of the net.

But Barnet looked increasingly menacing on the break and had chances to seal a comfortable victory.

Nicky Bailey burst on to a Richard Graham pass to thump a post from 25 yards in the 55th minute and Ben Strevens spurned a gilt-edged chance when he jabbed a Bailey free-kick wide from four yards in the 66th minute.

Then a swift counter attack by the visitors ended with Damien Batt skimming the crossbar with a 20-yard shot.

But Burton's never-say-die spirit drove them forward for final assault and it paid dividends as Stride notched his first Conference goal of the season.

Barnet failed to clear a long throw-in by Webster and the ball broke loose for the Burton skipper to rifle home a left-foot shot from 10 yards.

Barnet 0-2 Hereford
Nationwide Conference, Saturday 12th February 2005 @ 15:00; Underhill Stadium
Barnet's race to promotion was slowed by Hereford who scored a fine 2-0 win at Underhill.

Daniel Carey-Bertram put the Bulls ahead after 36 minutes, firing home right-footed after being found by Danny Williams on the left.

The same player almost made it 2-0 after 70 minutes but was denied by a fine save from keeper Scott Tynan.

Joe Anyinsah also tested the home defence on several occasions as Hereford pushed on.

But Barnet were eventually beaten again by a 90th minute goal that sealed the points for the visitors - and it was a well-worked effort.

A fine pass from Craig Stanley from inside the Hereford half found Adam Stansfield, who twisted to fire a fierce shot into the net from inside the penalty area.

It was a well-deserved victory for Hereford who created the better chances as Barnet had an off-day.

The Bees started brightly enough, winning a string of early corners, but couldn't find a way into the match.

Accrington 4-1 Barnet
Nationwide Conference, Saturday 19th February 2005 @ 15:00; The Interlink Express Stadium
Runaway league leaders Barnet slumped to their heaviest defeat of the season as Accrington secured a vital win to help them in their promotion push.

John Coleman's side went into the match full of confidence after stringing together five victories in a row and they secured all three points with an emphatic victory.

Lee McEvilly started the scoring with a first-half penalty, Rory Prendergast added a second on 55 minutes and late strikes from substitute Ian Craney and Paul Mullin completed the rout.

Barnet scored a late consolation goal through Giuliano Grazioli.

The scoreline could have been even greater but for the fine form of Barnet keeper Scott Tynan. The Bees shot-stopper produced fine first-half saves to deny McEvilly and Mike Flynn - the latter when he tipped over the Stanley player's powerful header.

Barnet 2-1 Aldershot
Nationwide Conference, Saturday 26th February 2005 @ 15:00; Underhill Stadium
Barnet put their march towards the Conference title back on track with a hard fought 2-1 win over Aldershot, despite playing the final 17 minutes with only ten men.

The Bees almost went ahead in the ninth minute when Brett Johnson's untimely slip let in Lee Roach, but Nikki Bull got down well to save at the striker's feet. Ten minutes later Underhill erupted as Ben Strevens gave Barnet the lead after finishing a neat move.

Nick Bailey picked out Roach, who in turn fed Richard Graham. The winger jinked his way into the box before firing a low cross into the Aldershot penalty area for Strevens to hammer home his second goal of the season.

The Shots also had their chances when Jon Challinor pulled off a neat turn on the edge of the box before bending his shot goalwards only for Barnet keeper Scott Tynan to parry into the path of Adrian Caceres, who was also denied by Tynan.

Giuliano Grazioli doubled Barnet's lead in the 59th minute after Graham had worked his way down the left flank before crossing for him to steer the ball past Bull for his 21st goal of the season.

But the league leaders have been careless of late, and they were guilty of another lack of concentration when on-loan striker Jake Robinson pulled a goal back for the Shots. The Brighton man poked home from close range after a Tim Sills knockdown.

Barnet were then reduced to ten men after Dean Sinclair was given his marching orders. Having been booked for a foul in the first half, the midfielder reacted angrily to a foul by Sills and was shown a second yellow following a push on the striker.

Aldershot pressed forward and in the dying moments could have earned a share of the points when Scott Rendell's header hit the post and bounced clear, but the Bees clung on to their lead.

York 2-1 Barnet
Nationwide Conference, Tuesday 1st March 2005 @ 19:45; KitKat Cresent
York City were full value for their 2-1 win over runaway leaders Barnet with a skilful and hard-working performance in an entertaining game.

City have now recorded maximum points from their last two games while Barnet have only won once in their last six.

Barnet had the game's first chance when the trickery of Richard Graham on the left wing ended with a low teasing cross which Lee Roach met, but keeper Chris Porter made a vital block.

City took some time to create any sort of opening, but from Darren Dunning's free-kick on 25 minutes Paul Groves flicked the ball goalwards and Shane Gore saved well at the near post.

Barnet were not allowed to settle in possession and from some sustained City pressure Donovan, revelling in his new central midfield role, ran at the visitors defence and his goalbound shot was deflected for a corner.

The visitors then went close when two City defenders missed a free-kick launched down the middle and Giuliano Grazioli's flick struck the outside of the post.

Just a minute before the interval, City went ahead. Paul Robinson and Andy Bishop linked on the edge of the box and released Donovan, whose right-foot angled shot from eight yards beat Gore at his near post.

In stoppage time Dave Merris made a vital clearance in clearing a wicked inswinging Barnet corner off the line.

Barnet equalised on 58 minutes when Dwane Lee took a ball launched over the City defence in his stride before firing in a low cross which Grazioli stabbed home from close range.

Defender Jon Maloney was desperately unlucky to see a venomous volley pushed over the bar by keeper Gore from Groves' flick.

From the well worked resulting corner Dunning's pin-point curling cross was knocked home by Maloney from six yards.

City defended stoutly to repel the expected Bees response, while near the end both Bishop and Merris went close to adding a third.

Nationwide Conference, Saturday 5th March 2005 @ 15:00; Hilton Park
The sound of bursting bubbles echoed around Hilton Park as Leigh RMI's mini revival came to a sudden halt at the hands of runaway leaders Barnet.

After two victories the bottom club came up against the leaders and the gulf in class was there for all to see with Giuliano Grazioli grabbing a brace to take his season's total to 24.

Leigh's problems mounted with the sending off of Ryan Clarke in injury time for a second yellow.

Barnet, always in control, started brightly with Nick Bailey orchestrating them from midfield.

And it was one of his free-kicks that got Barnet going in the 13th minute and Leigh goalkeeper Jon Worsnop did well to turn it round the post.

Bailey was again at the hub of another Barnet move when he picked out Ismail Yakubu but the rampaging full-back headed straight at Worsnop.

Mark Peers tried his luck from 30 yards as RMI stuttered into the game, but his shot was well wide.

Worsnop then had to race from his line to dive at the feet of Ben Strevens after a cross from Liam Hatch caused problems in the home box.

It was no surprise when Barnet took the lead in the 37th minute following a great run by Dean Sinclair. He won a corner that Bailey played a short to Richard Graham and Grazioli headed past Worsnop.

Ryan Clarke was booked for a foul on Bailey six minutes after the break before Peers received the same treatment for another foul and from Bailey's free-kick, Strevens headed back into the danger area and Hatch beat Worsnop from close range.

Neil Gibson provided RMI's first goal attempt in the second half but was well off target from 25 yards.

Grazioli then latched on to a long clearance, but his lob on the turn was yards over the bar.

However, he did grab his second in the 77th minute when he showed his class to bring down a pass from Anthony Charles, beat his marker, and pass it into Worsnop's bottom left hand corner.

In a rare home attack Yakubu came to his side's rescue when he headed behind Peers' dangerous cross.

In the last minute Clarke cleared off the line to deny Grazioli a hat-trick and that was it for the Leigh defender, as a minute later he received his second yellow for a foul on Grazioli.

Barnet 0-3 Crawley Town
Nationwide Conference, Saturday 12th March 2005 @ 15:00; Underhill Stadium
An electrifying Barnet performance was capped by a well deserved victory at Underhill as ten-man Crawley suffered their second successive defeat.

Goals from Dean Sinclair, in the first half and second-half strikes from Liam Hatch and Dwane Lee ensured the Bees had a comfortable afternoon.

Things could have been so different for Crawley had Anthony Charles not cleared Allan Tait's efforts off the line immediately after the restart.

Crawley's afternoon got worse five minutes later, when Simon Wormull was shown a straight red card for hacking down Bees winger Richard Graham.

With their first attack on goal, Barnet found themselves in the lead. Ian Hendon's cross from the right found the head of Sinclair who made no mistake for the opener.

The Bees were unable to capitalise on their early strike as Crawley composed themselves and thwarted any danger from the home side.

The visitors had their first attempt on Scott Tynan's goal on 16 minutes. Ian Simpemba headed on for Neil Jenkins, but the shot flew wide off the post.

Barnet however got their passing game going and doubled their lead on 47minutes.

Lee and Ben Strevens combined for the latter to cross and Hatch rose powerfully to head past Phil Smith from six yards.

Despite being a man down, Crawley kept on going without any reward. Barnet's third came midway through the second half. Simon Clist's corner found Hatch, whose pass to Lee was buried into the roof of the net from close in.

Only some fine goalkeeping from Smith kept the Bees attack from inflicting further damage as the game drew to a close.

Barnet 7-1 Farnborough
Nationwide Conference, Saturday 19th March 2005 @ 15:00; Underhill Stadium
Giuliano Grazioli began his 30th birthday celebrations in style with a first-half hat-trick, as Barnet romped home to a 7-1 victory over Farnborough at Underhill - the Bees' biggest win of the season.

Farnborough found themselves a goal up after six minutes when Anthony Charles pulled down Robert Traynor and Jay Smith curled a wonderfully executed strike over the wall and into Scott Tynan's bottom right-hand corner.

But the early goal only seemed to spur Barnet on. In the 14th minute Grazioli pounced on a Jake Cole error to roll the ball into the empty net.

He followed it up with a delightful lob, and a side-footed finish completed his hat-trick.

In between Richard Graham hit Barnet's third to leave Farnborough totally shell-shocked at the interval.

Boro boss Neil Sillett made three changes at half-time and the risk back-fired when Cole was involved in a head-on collision with substitute Lee Roach in the 67th minute. The 19-year-old keeper had to be stretchered off.

Having used up all of their substitutes, left-back Jimmy Turner found himself between the sticks. After Tony Taggart's was sent off for two bookings Farnborough were always fighting a losing battle.

Turner was finally beaten when substitute Damien Batt drove home following good work by Roach. Roach and Dean Sinclair completed the rout late on.

Barnet took full advantage of Boro's lack of discipline which was compounded by Kevin Hemsley's late dismissal for a professional foul.

The Bees now look odds-on to achieve promotion after completing their third victory in a row. This was Farnborough's fourth defeat on the spin and they are running out of time to save their Conference place.

FGR 0-2 Barnet
Nationwide Conference, Friday 25th March 2005 @ 15:00; The Lawn
Champions elect Barnet took the points after a fierce battle at The Lawn but they were gifted both goals by Forest Green, who up until the opener more than matched their high-flying opponents.

Rovers started strongly and went close after seven minutes when Hugh McAuley's corner was headed just over by Adam Garner from close range.

Four minutes later the home side were denied by the woodwork when a cross from the right wing was punched by keeper Scott Tynan, but only as far as Andy Harris, whose superb attempted lob cracked against the crossbar before being cleared.

Barnet's first dangerous attempt came just after the half hour when Ben Strevens' header needed Dean Williams to be at his best to tip the ball over the bar.

Disaster struck for Rovers ten minutes into the second half.

Alan Lewer chose not to replace the injured Matt Gadsby at half-time and paid the price when Richard Graham left Gadsby in his wake before sending over a low cross which Strevens headed into the right hand corner.

Twelve minutes later it was Garner's turn to add to Rovers' misery. A long ball over the top should have been cleared first time by the Forest Green defender but he hesitated and Liam Hatch nipped in to lob the ball over Williams to secure the win.

Barnet 1-0 Canvey
Nationwide Conference, Monday 28th March 2005 @ 15:00; Underhill Stadium
Barnet made the Conference title a mere formality as a Ben Strevens header condemned Canvey Island to a 1-0 defeat at Underhill.

Despite Barnet having much of the early possession it was Canvey who threatened first. Richard Graham made an uncharacteristic mistake on 25 minutes which was pounced upon by Junior McDougald.

Nobody could stop his run and the former Dagenham & Redbridge striker was unlucky to see his 18-yard shot drift just wide.

Soon after Jeff Minton and McDougald combined wonderfully down the Canvey right and it needed a well-timed Ismail Yakubu tackle to prevent what would have been a beautifully crafted goal.

Canvey stepped out to the second half with a new sense of adventure, but they were soon punished.

Barnet's new found freedom allowed them the space they so craved in the first half and they were in no mood to waste it.

After 58 minutes Dean Sinclair lofted the ball deep into the area but nobody could add the decisive touch.

Graham learned from Sinclair's mistake, placing his cross directly on to the head of Strevens, who couldn't fail to find the target for the third time in as many games.

Substitute Lee Roach should have sealed the win late on, but it didn't matter.

A win away at Norwich Victoria next weekend will rubber stamp what has been inevitable for a long time and the Bees will once again be a Football League club.

Northwich 2-0 Barnet
Nationwide Conference, Saturday 2nd April 2005 @ 15:00; Wincham Park
Northwich spoiled Barnet's Championship party.

With a following of nearly 1,000 and three points needed to secure the Conference title, there was a party atmosphere among the away supporters.

But they were silenced by two goals from Paul Brayson who Northwich fans did not expect to see again. He had been loaned to Gateshead after finding the travel too difficult.

But Northwich manager, Steve Burr, anxious to put a stop to a run of defeats, recalled the Geordie to Cheshire and he was the champagne hero.

Burr said: "It wasn't an inspired decision, it was just that I had to do something to stop this terrible run.

"I told our players to go out and excite me and the spectators and I can't tell you how proud I am of them.

"But Barnet deserve the title and will win it."

Barnet boss Paul Fairclough still raised a smile and said: "It takes me minutes now to get over a defeat rather than days.

"It was about two teams who had to apply themselves on the worst pitch we have played on all season.

"That is not an excuse. It was the same for both sides and Northwich applied themselves better without doubt and I don't believe the occasion got to us."

Northwich matched Barnet for commitment and stunned them with two second-half goals.

A Danny Mayman free-kick was firmly headed home by Brayson who later benefited from the harrying work of Johnny Allan. He dispossessed Ismail Yakubu and set up Brayson for a thumping finish.

Barnet recovered to apply a spell of pressure but the nearest the game got to another goal was when Brayson struck the crossbar in the last minute.

Barnet 3-1 Halifax GOING UP!!!!!!!!!!!
Nationwide Conference, Saturday 9th April 2005 @ 15:00; Underhill Stadium
Barnet were crowned champions of the Nationwide Conference and sealed a return to the Football League after an absence of four years, in front of almost 4,000 jubilant fans at Underhill.

Halifax, however, had clearly not read the Bees' celebration party script, as with only a point needed to secure promotion, Barnet went behind to Halifax striker Lewis Killeen's strike after 11 minutes.

Halifax were reduced to ten men just after the hour when John Grant received a straight red card for appearing to elbow Simon King.

The Bees however were stung into action and were level ten minutes before the break through Ben Strevens.

Simon King stretched the Barnet lead three minutes after the restart with a diving header, and the game was effectively over when the prolific Giuliano Grazioli buried his 28th goal of a very productive season.

Halifax in desperate need of points to ensure their own play-off spot had no intention of lying down to die. Their football was gutsy and determined, and the Yorkshire side may feel they deserved something from the game.

With their first attack of the game the visitors took the lead. Bees defender King was unable to make a routine clearance, allowing the alert Ryan Sugden a shot. Scott Tynan the Bees keeper saved low down, but he was powerless to stop Killeen following up into an empty net.

Barnet were unruffled and moved level through Strevens after a neat Grazioli lay-off and a strong mazy run from Dean Sinclair.

King scored the Bees' second of the afternoon, atoning for his early error, after some excellent approach play from Liam Hatch.

The party atmosphere was further enhanced when hitman Grazioli converted Hatch's cross from the right after some relentless Bees pressure.

"We're on our way to the football league," sung the Barnet faithful.

The Bees certainly are.

Morecambe 1-1 Barnet
Nationwide Conference, Saturday 16th April 2005 @ 15:00; Christie Park
Morecambe picked up what could be a vital point in this thriller against champions Barnet.

A superb second-half performance saw Jim Harvey's side come back from a goal behind to clinch a deserved draw on a tense afternoon.

It was the introduction of young striker Danny Carlton after the break that changed the pattern of the game. His pace gave the Shrimps a new dimension and caused the tight Bees defence a number of problems.

The first half saw both sides struggle to gain control of the game with both defences very much on top until Barnet were gifted a lead out of the blue on 27 minutes.

A long clearance should have caused the Morecambe defence no problems but keeper Ryan Robinson hesitated along with central defender Darren Kempson and Liam Hatch nipped in between the two to head the ball into the empty net.

It was a rare attacking moment of a first half that failed to inspire, but the second half was a totally different affair.

Carlton gave the Shrimps a new edge and put Barnet under pressure for the first time. He was immediately in the action with a great chance on 46 minutes after Ismail Yakubu's slip but he curled his shot well wide.

Seconds later, keeper Shane Gore was forced to tip over Chris Blackburn's dangerous cross and Lee Elam broke through but missed his kick as he looked to square the ball to Michael Twiss.

Elam was not to be denied for long, however, as he fired his side back into the game on 57 minutes. Wayne Curtis was the architect with a great run at the heart of the Barnet defence before teeing up Elam whose shot beat Gore via a wicked deflection.

Three minutes later things looked even better for Morecambe as Gore was sent off for hauling down Carlton outside the box as he raced through.

First choice keeper Scott Tynan came on and was quickly in action with a great save from Curtis' free-kick before Simon King produced a brilliant last-gasp tackle to defy the lurking Twiss.

The Shrimps continued to press with Tynan saving smartly low to his left after an excellent run and shot from Twiss before Kempson headed a Carlton free-kick just wide.

The best chance of a winner, however, came for the visitors seven minutes from time. Substitute Patrick Ada crossed from the left for Lee Roach to side-foot wide from six yards out when he looked certain to score.

Barnet 1-1 Carlisle
Nationwide Conference, Tuesday 19th April 2005 @ 19:45; Underhill Stadium

There were fireworks at Barnet's end of season celebrations as Giuliano Grazioli struck six minutes into injury time to draw 1-1 with nine-man Carlisle United.

The usually free-scoring Bees had struggled to find a way past United goalkeeper Matt Glennon who was in fine form.

They had trailed for the majority of the match, but after Carlisle had Tom Cowan and Danny Livesey sent off in the 70th minute, Barnet were able to press forward and capitalise.

Carlisle looked to have soured the taste of champagne until Grazioli somehow managed to turn the ball past Glennon in a crowded penalty area with the last kick of the match.

Magno Vieria had given Carlisle the lead in the 31st minute when he capitalised on an error by Ismail Yakubu.

The Brazilian-born striker was first to react after the Barnet centre-back only half cleared Chris Lumsdon's through ball. Vieria picked up the loose ball before lashing it past Scott Tynan in the Bees net from 25 yards.

Lumsdon thought that he had increased United's lead five minutes later when his free-kick appeared to be goalbound. But as the midfielder threw his arms in the air to celebrate, Yakubu somehow made amends for his earlier error by hacking the ball off the line.

Ironically it was the Bees who had started the better. Grazioli should have give the champions the lead in only the eighth minute but he failed to connect with Ben Strevens' tempting cross.

Richard Graham then burst into the Carlisle box before feeding Dean Sinclair but the ball got stuck under the midfielder's feet and when he did manage to muster a shot at goal it was easily saved by Glennon.

Carlisle looked to add to their tally in the second half with Peter Murphy going close.

But their chances of winning the match were handed a severe blow when Cowen received his marching orders after handling Yakubu's goalbound header.

Referee Mr Lee awarded a spot-kick that Simon Clist sent blazing over the bar.

After the miss Livesey continued to protest with Mr Lee who wasted no time in flashing the red card for the second time.

Barnet threw everything forward with Dean Sinclair and Nick Bailey going closest before Grazioli kick-started the celebrations which sent boss Paul Fairclough running on to the pitch in delight.

Dagenham 0-2 Barnet

Nationwide Conference champions Barnet ended a triumphant season with defeat in this London derby at the Glyn Hopkin Stadium.

On St. Georges' Day, the Bees were slayed, with the Daggers scoring either side of the break.

The visitors rarely produced the classy football that has kept them at the top of the league since September, their minds perhaps on football in League Two next season.

Craig Mackail-Smith put the home side ahead from a Paul Bruce corner in stoppage-time at the end of the first half.

The Daggers doubled their lead six minutes after the re-start, Glen Southam pouncing after some good work from Scott Griffiths from the left.

On the few occasions Barnet threatened Tony Roberts' goal, they found a solid Daggers defence with Ashley Vickers and Anwar Uddin in particular having inspired games.

Bees midfielder Nicky Bailey should have found the target after 11 minutes, but failed to test Roberts when clean through.

Keeper Shane Gore, playing his last game for Barnet, saved well from Chris Moore, before denying Jake Leberl's header four minutes before half-time.

Dagenham however took the lead in injury-time when Bruce's corner deceived everyone except Mackail-Smith who tapped into an empty net.

The Bees failed to respond and found themselves further behind on 51minutes. Scott Griffiths found space to cross from the left, which Moore failed to connect with but the alert Southam was able to stab into the unguarded net.

Not the end to the season Barnet would have wanted perhaps, but they did however come up against a Daggers side unbeaten in their last seven games.
